This week, I posted a comment to a question on Facebook from a guy who asked “can you launch an online business for free?”
All but one of the comments answering the question said ‘no, it wasn’t possible to launch an online business for free’… or words to that effect.
Guess whose comment said the opposite…
That’s right, it was me.. not surprisingly.
Also not surprisingly, I’ve not yet had a reply to that comment from anyone.
I can only surmise that it wasn’t something they wanted to hear.
Here’s my reply…
‘Controversial opinion here… but yes, it is absolutely possible to start and launch an online business for free.
There are multiple FREE-To-Use platforms that allow you to publish or sell content.
Payment is often taken out of any sales made meaning that it costs you nothing upfront.
Content is free to create using tools that we all have as part of modern living such as smartphone, Google Docs, laptop, etc.
Content can be shared on multiple FREE-To-Use platforms where thousands of potential customers gather, such as Facebook, Medium, Patreon, Substack, X, Instagram, and TikTok to name a few.
And I believe some people will be successful…if they know what they are doing…
And they can simply ‘observe’ people to see what they are doing, they do not necessarily need to buy that information.
HOWEVER…
If you want to see results FAST and enjoy success QUICKER, then yes, you are probably going to need to invest in yourself to scale your business.
Being shown by someone who has already done it is always going to be better than trying to figure it all out yourself, especially if you want or need to see results quickly.
Just so that people know… I go for the paid option because ‘money loves speed’ and investing in yourself, tools and education really helps speed up the process.
But to answer your question…
Yes, you can start and launch an online business for free, and it could be a huge success… one day… but it could take a long time and a lot of work.’
OK, so let’s unpack this a little, shall we?
Scroll down to carry on reading…
It’s not that I want to be a right royal pain in the arse, I just don’t like to see nonsense being sprouted just to push forward your own business agenda.
The truth is, the people who were saying shite like ‘No, absolutely not’ are speaking from a point of view that is…
- They are not aware of all the different tools and business models there are online, or they are intentionally ignoring them.
- They are affiliate marketers and business owners who offer mentoring and coaching products in that specific industry. In a nutshell, they are selling products to people that teach them ‘how to launch a successful online business’.
Of course they are going to bash the idea that you can start an online business for free… but the truth is, you absolutely can.
And you can probably make a success of it if you are willing to put the work in.
AND dare I say it, you can probably learn all that you need for free and put it into action if you have the right personality type and mindset.
However…
As you will have seen in my original comment that I left on the post…
I do think that spending money on education and tools is a great way to accelerate yourself to success.
It really does help… but let’s also get a few things clear here…
A lot of people have spent a fuck-ton of money on education and coaching and have not been successful in any shape or form.
There are people who have made small fortunes and become very successful without paying for mentoring and coaching.
Spending money on education and mentoring is in no way a guarantee of success… it helps, but it is no guarantee.
Also, there is an element of ‘self-justification’ in those messages.
People like to ‘justify’ the fact they spent a lot of money on education and tools.
It’s a kind of ‘I spent a lot of money learning this, and so should you!’ attitude.
It reminds me of the old people who grew up in houses without central heating and complained constantly about how cold and miserable winters were when they were children…
But as soon as a teenager today complains about being cold when the boiler breaks down, instead of agreeing and sympathising with them, they retort with ‘my whole childhood was freezing, I had to suffer it, so should you’ kind of shite.
Many of these affiliates would no-doubt hate to see someone come flying past them making thousands of dollars each month without spending several thousand dollars on coaching.
But the truth is, their business model is to show and teach people what to do at a price, and so yes, they don’t want people thinking that they can do what they do for free.
They want them to understand that they NEED and MUST invest in training to learn what they need to do.
I myself have spent thousands of dollars on training of all kinds over the years, and that was my decision because I am busy and I want the information fast.
But know this…
As part of my work as a writer, copywriter, and product creator, I was paid to study and observe people and their methods, and I can tell you this, you can learn what people do online by simply watching and taking notes.
It really isn’t that difficult.
You’ll be amazed at how much you can learn when you ‘observe’ people and take notes.
For example…do you need to learn how to make sales in Messenger?
Make friends with affiliate marketers and wait for the messages to flood in.
Believe me, they will!
Oh boy, they certainly will!!

Copy and paste them into doc files or take screenshots… you’ll soon have a whole vault of conversations to study.
Why not record videos to look back on. There are several free-to-use online screen recording tools you can use.
I often record sales funnels so that I can go back and study them in my leisure.
As soon as an email arrives or I see a Facebook advert directing me to a sales page I like…. out comes the video recorder and microphone.

I talk myself through the funnel pointing out what I like, what I don’t like and how they differ or are similar to other funnels I am seeing being used at that time.
I have videos of several big Facebook High Ticket Affiliate Marketers… you know the ones, they say you don’t need a website or a funnel but they have a website and a funnel. 😉
So look, what I am saying here is…
Yes, you can build an online business for free, and no, you don’t necessarily need to buy mentoring, coaching, or any kind of education.
But also know this…
It can be a real ballaching timesuck of a task that can actually lose you more money than what it costs to learn…
Plus, there is no accountability if you do it all by yourself, and that can be a surefire way of ‘quitting too soon’.
Without someone to ‘talk to’ or ask for advice when you are ‘feeling the pressure’, there is a greater chance that you will quit.
So you now have to ask yourself this one question about starting an online business for free…
Is it really worth it?
Well, is it?
Until next time.
Have a great day.
